The role of mimic gestures in the communication of the Kalmyks
The article is devoted to the study of non-verbal means of communication in Kalmyk linguistic culture. They are gestures, facial expressions, postures, intonation, timbre, tempo. Mimicry is one of the important elements of nonverbal communicative behavior, characterizing the mentality, character traits of the Kalmyk people. Among the mimic gestures, a smile occupies a special place. The Kalmyk language has lexemes that can denote different in quality and degree of intensity of smile gestures. In nonverbal behavior of the Kalmyks, the expression of some emotions is connected with the state of the face, with its separate parts (embarrassment, indecision, dissatisfaction, mistrust, disdain, annoyance, etc.). The gaze is also a means of establishing contact between interlocutors. Different peoples have different characteristics of a gaze related to its direction. Mongolian peoples with the help of looks transfer much more information than Europeans. They widely use facial expressions associated with the "shade" of the gaze, the expression of the eyes.
Key words: gestures, communicative behavior, facial expressions, gaze, Kalmyk language.

The influence of biographical context on a writer's understanding of the role and purposes of literature: the case of Fyodor Gladkov
This article analyzes the influence of Fyodor Gladkov's (1883–1958) biographical experience on his understanding of the role of literature as a tool for social transformation and the creation of a new reality. Using archival materials and historical context, this article traces the evolution of the writer's views from a naturalistic depiction of the lower classes to the classics of socialist realism. This detailed annotation highlights the key stages of Gladkov's life and their reflection in his work. The writer's biography serves as a navigational map of the era of revolutions, the Civil War, and Soviet construction, defining the tasks of literature as reflecting and transforming reality. Childhood in a peasant family, revolutionary activity, exile, participation in the restoration of factories, and the war shaped a commitment to the "truth of fact," the heroism of labor, and collective energy. An analysis of the novels "Cement" and "Energy," an autobiographical trilogy, demonstrates how personal experience dictates artistic decisions and textual revisions to make them accessible to working-class readers. Gladkov follows Gorky's tradition of "engineers of souls," simplifying form for the masses, responding to criticism (the 1926 debate), combating the drunkenness of colleagues, and influencing Russian grammar. His ethic is a bold statement of a position where social function prevails over form. The conclusion emphasizes biography as the meaning-forming structure of the myth of the Soviet creator.
Key words: Fyodor Gladkov, biography genre, biographical context, socialist realism, novel "Cement," role of literature, heroism of labor, autobiographical trilogy, writer's ethics, Russian State Archive of Literature and Art.

Indirect speech acts in English-language media discourse
This article examines the nature of indirect speech acts (mixed (transitional) communicative sentence types), and analyzes the use of conventional and non-conventional indirect speech acts in interpersonal communication in modern English-language media discourse. The need for research is determined by the correlation of its topic with one of the leading trends in modern linguistics – pragmalinguistics, the essence of which is the study of linguistic phenomena in the aspect of human activity. An indirect speech act is a way of expressing the meaning of an utterance indirectly, using additional semantics implied by the context of communication. The speaker intentionally formulates the sentence in such a way that the listener perceives the hidden meaning in addition to the literal content of what was said. The relevance of this study is due to the need for a holistic approach in identifying the features of the use of indirect speech acts in modern English-language media discourse, taking into account the context.
Key words: speech act, indirect speech act, intermediary (mixed) communicative types of sentences, pragmatic meaning, illocutionary goal, conventional speech acts, unconventional (occasional) speech acts, media discourse.

Auto-images of America in military conflict in Afghanistan in the presidential discourse
The relevance of this article lies in the need to study the ways of forming different auto-images of the state in political discourse against the background of the same problem by representatives of different ideologies. This study examines the changes in America's auto-image in presidential discourse in the context of the military conflict with Afghanistan. A comparative analysis of two auto-images formed by George W. Bush, a representative of the Republican Party, and Democrat Barack Obama during their time as president is carried out. Due to the difference in ideological orientation and attitude to the problems of Afghanistan of these presidents, two auto-images of the state are being formed, focusing on the intentions and political actions of each author. A comparative analysis of these images is carried out, taking into account the political situation and the ideological component of each politician. The language tools involved in their formation are also described.

Formal equivalence and non-equivalence of grammatical units in English and Tajik languages (on the example of prepositions)
The given article dwells on the comparative analysis of prepositions in English and Tajik within the framework of the theory of equivalence. The study is situated in the context of comparative linguistics and translation studies, where the accurate rendering of grammatical relationships is as crucial as translating lexical meaning. The primary objective is to identify and systematize the phenomena of formal equivalence and non-equivalence of prepositions, determine the causes of non-equivalence, and outline strategies for their adequate translation. The article examines simple, complex, and compound prepositions, providing a detailed comparison of their usage with examples from literary sources. The analysis reveals that while core prepositions often have direct formal equivalents (e.g., from – az, with – bo), many cases exhibit partial equivalence or complete non-equivalence due to structural, semantic, and contextual factors. The findings have significant theoretical value for comparative linguistics and practical implications for translation practice, lexicography, and language pedagogy, highlighting the necessity of prioritizing functional and communicative adequacy over formal correspondence.
Key words: linguistics, comparative analysis, equivalence, non-equivalence, prepositions, translation theory, English and Tajik languages, grammatical units, formal correspondence, grammatical relationships.

Semantico-functional features of some Tajik borrowed interjections and their English equivalents
The given article presents a comparative analysis of the semantic and functional features of several borrowed interjections in the Tajik language and their English equivalents. The relevance of the study stems from the need to examine the influence of interlingual borrowing on the semantic and pragmatic structure of this class of linguistic units. To achieve the stated goals and objectives, the following research methods were used: descriptive, comparative, contextual, and functional. S. Aini's novel "Gulomon" served as empirical material. Using descriptive, comparative, and functional methods, the author analyzes how interjections borrowed by the Tajik language (primarily from Arabic and Persian) adapt to its norms and acquire new culturally conditioned connotations. The results of the study show that, despite the universality of some emotional reactions, interjections borrowed into the Tajik language often have additional connotations due to the cultural and historical context, which distinguishes them from their direct English equivalents.
Key words: semantic and functional features, comparative analysis, borrowed interjections, Tajik interjections, English equivalents, English and Tajik, additional and conditioned connotations, descriptive, comparative, and functional methods, cultural and historical context, semantic and pragmatic structure.

Politeness in communicative behavior
Lexical and grammatical means of politeness play a major role in speech etiquette. These include words and expressions used to demonstrate delicacy when dealing with people of advanced age and social rank; when addressing elders, refined and respectful words of high style are used. Respectful and polite attitudes among Kalmyks can also be expressed not only lexically but also grammatically, specifically through verb mood.
Key words: speech etiquette, lexical and grammatical means of language, politeness, verb mood.

The US government's development of a new isolationist strategy. Congressional debates on the issue of the USSR's neutral status in the European military conflict
This article examines the process of forming a new policy of neutrality of the U.S. government. Due to the outbreak of World War II, a special session of the 76th U.S. Congress in October-November 1939 held a lengthy discussion of the political reforms proposed by senators from both parties. A special role in the discussion of the American senators was assigned to the position of the Soviet Union. It is worth considering the assessments of various political groups of the Democratic and Republican parties of the neutral position of the USSR at the initial stage of World War II, both from the point of view of isolationist and internationalist positions in American society.

The interplay between state sovereignty and international obligation on refugee laws: a foreign policy perspective
States frequently wield immigration and migration agreements as potent instruments in the intricate arena of international relations, leveraging them as bargaining chips to advance diverse strategic objectives encompassing diplomacy, development aid, and even the imposition of sanctions. The escalating flows of migrants, driven by a confluence of economic imperatives, political instability, and environmental degradation, have presented intricate challenges related to border management, the protection of human rights, and the facilitation of social integration, thereby necessitating robust diplomatic engagement among nations. Migration, rather than being solely a humanitarian concern, has become deeply intertwined with national interests and security considerations, thus providing states with leverage in negotiations. This paper aims to evaluate states' strategic maneuvering in migration policies as a foreign policy tool, to attain geopolitical advantages, foster economic partnerships, or exert influence on the domestic affairs of other nations. The gap between developed and less developed countries, with issues concerning human rights and migration, also reveals the weaknesses of international norms that obligate states to commit to these norms, as they are often overlooked due to several reasons, such as sovereignty and the anarchic nature of the international system. The paper finds that international legal frameworks are usually respected by states when the concepts of sovereignty and self-determination are not realistic for less powerful countries. States frequently employ migration and human rights policies as a foreign policy tool to cultivate rapprochement with target countries, strategically relaxing visa requirements to foster goodwill and facilitate enhanced economic and cultural exchange. The author employs a qualitative method of scientific analysis, which assesses non-numerical data to explain the meaning and nuances that reveal states' motivations in their approach to foreign policy formulation and strategies. The data are sourced from national and international documents, an institution including, treaties, and conventions.
Key words: refugee law, foreign policy, sovereignty, migration, geopolitics, international commitment, human rights, world wars, asylum.

Evolution of foreign policy of the republic of Indonesia towards Turkmenistan (1992-2024)
The work is dedicated to the study of the evolution of Indonesia's foreign policy towards Turkmenistan. The article examines in detail the key stages of the history of bilateral relations, as well as the main areas of cooperation between the two countries. Special attention is given to official intergovernmental agreements.
The research employs document analysis methods from the governmental bodies of Indonesia and Turkmenistan. Statistical data demonstrate a growing trend in economic cooperation between the two countries. The study posits that Indonesian-Turkmen relations can be divided into three key periods: the period of establishing diplomatic relations, the period of stagnation and freezing of cooperation, and the period of revival and expansion of cooperation.
It is noted that political cooperation between Indonesia and Turkmenistan significantly outpaces economic and humanitarian cooperation. Meanwhile, interactions between ordinary citizens remain extremely limited.

Soviet-Libyan relations in 1969-1976: a view from France
This article, based on materials from the French Foreign Ministry Archives, presents French diplomats' views on the development of Soviet-Libyan relations in the first years after Muammar Gaddafi's rise to power in Libya. Initially, Paris was skeptical about the prospects for rapprochement between Moscow and Tripoli. However, beginning in 1974-1975, amidst Libya's neighboring Egypt's rapprochement with the United States and Western countries' refusal to sell arms to Libya, Soviet-Libyan contacts intensified.
Soviet-Libyan relations were based on military cooperation, the scale of which was assessed by the French as quite significant. In the economic sphere, however, the USSR was unable to compete for the Libyan market with Western countries, which initially enjoyed a much stronger position in the country. Overall, Soviet policy toward Libya was assessed as cautious and pragmatic. Without spending significant resources, Moscow skillfully took advantage of the weaknesses and mistakes of Western countries and expanded its sphere of influence where possible.

War as a pattern of capitalist development: Russia in inter-imperialist rivalry (19th-20th centuries)
In historical and publicist literature it is often found that in 1914 no one wanted war, but for reasons of irresponsible behavior of politicians, the was is started. And it was already impossible to stop her. This opinion is erroneous. The European elites of that time, with the exception of the Russian one, were eager for war. It was the result of a century-long journey taken by Europe since the Congress of Vienna.

The resurgence of Russia in Africa's geopolitical landscape
In recent years, Russia has been actively engaged in African affairs, this is evident at the start of 2023, the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov embarked on an 11- country tour of the continent for intense ne otiations. These talks covered political and economic matters, as well as efforts to counter international challenges and threats, and addressed the new geopolitical realities in the region. The first Russia-Africa Summit served as a catalyst for cooperation and deepened the ties between Russia and African nations. The geopolitical landscape has undergone a complete transformation, with Africa assuming significant importance in Russia's foreign policy and economy. Moscow's foreign policy has shown increased interest in Africa, primarily due to the continent's large population and sustainable economic growth. This article aims to evaluate the growing importance of Africa for Russia's global interests and study the most important factors affecting the role of Africa in Russian foreign policy. The article clarifies that Russia's African policy primarily focuses on three main themes: building alternative economic partnerships, pursuing geopolitical influence, and promoting multipolarity.
Key words: Russia, Africa, foreign policy, renaissance, multipolarity, geopolitics, trade relations, energy diplomacy, Soviet Union, Cold War, strategic partnership, global West.

The policy of the Russian Empire in the Adriatic region on the eve of the First World War
The article is devoted to the policy of the Russian Empire in the Adriatic region on the eve of the First World War. International relations in this region are considered in the work from the point of view of the "Adriatic issue" (the intersection of the interests of Italy, Austria-Hungary and the national movements of the Yugoslav peoples on the basis of territorial and ethnopolitical disputes), the "Balkan issue" (the struggle of the peoples of the Balkan Peninsula for the territories of the former Ottoman Empire and the intersection of the interests of the great powers in the Balkans region), as well as the global context, which includes both the inter-bloc confrontation (the Entente and the Triple Alliance), So is the confrontation between the Triple Alliance allies (Austria-Hungary and Italy). Based on the results of the study, it is concluded that Russia's actions in the Adriatic during the period under review were based on a strategy of maneuvering, compensation and balancing (strategic defeat in the framework of the Bosnian crisis (the Buchlau agreement, 1908) and an attempt to compensate for it (the Racconigi agreement, 1909), which was due to both the complexity of international processes in Europe, and the internal political state of the Russian Empire after the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905) and the revolution (1905-1907).

Kyrgyz municipal communities during the war (1941–1945): state control over religion, the struggle with religious ideology and the spiritual support of society; the contribution of Muslims
The article, based on materials from the Central State Archives of the Kyrgyz Republic, the Russian State Archive of Socio-Political History and other archival sources, analyzes the war period in the Kirghiz SSR. During this period, policy towards religious denominations was strictly controlled, but space was retained for ideological and educational work, including updated forms of atheistic propaganda. A parallel decline in the number of mosques and an increase in the spiritual and moral activity of society are observed: data on the closure of mosques in the Naryn region and the complete absence of functioning mosques in the Issyk-Kul region by 1946 emphasize the forced nature of the changes, but do not exclude the expectation of a revival. An important aspect is the data on contributions to the Red Army support fund and on assistance to the families of war participants, as well as specific examples of agricultural and humanitarian actions by communities. The author shows the religious and moral support as a vital structure of society, which, despite mobilization and party control, contributed to moral stability, solidarity and the common cause of victory. In conclusion, the author addresses the personal meaning of the period: spirituality without a rigid ideological structure can be a support for the people during times of crisis and be valuable for the modern generation as a source of conscience, trust, and social responsibility.

Problems of development of Serbian national culture in socialist Croatia and the history of the creation of the Serbian Cultural Society "Zora" in 1989
Post-war socialist Croatia was conceived as a republic with two equal state-forming nations (Croatians and Serbs), whose relations would be harmonized based on the communist ideology of „The Brotherhood and Unity“. However, for a number of reasons, this ambitious plan was not realized, and Serbs in Croatia did not receive de facto linguistic and cultural equality. Beginning in the early 1970s, under the pretext of combating nationalism, they were gradually deprived of the right to their own national cultural institutions. An attempt to create a Serbian cultural society „Zora“ (“The Dawn”) was made in Knin in 1989, amid a crisis of communist ideology and rising national sentiment in Croatia, Serbia, and other republics of the federal Yugoslavia. This article reviews the history of the problem of national cultural institutions in Croatia, the specifics of the concept of the Serbian Cultural Society „Zora“ and the difficulties encountered in implementing this democratic initiative. The publications used were those that appeared as part of the media campaign in support of this project, as well as the recollections and interviews of participants in the events.
Key words: Croatia, Serbia, Yugoslavia, cultural institutions, interethnic relations, cultural policy.

The code of power and civilization in the court music of the Ming dynasty and its influence on local religion
In front of the Golden Throne Hall in the Forbidden City, the resonance of chime bells and jade chimes penetrates six hundred years of time, bringing us back to the dynasty that established world order with classical music. When Emperor Taizu Zhu Yuanzhang ascended the throne, he issued an imperial decree to "review ancient systems and rectify rituals and music." This was not a simple music revival movement, but a carefully planned civilization construction. The court music of the Ming Dynasty carried a civilization code far beyond the music itself. It was an acoustic totem of the dynasty's orthodoxy, a ritual and music presentation of world order, and a cultural coordinate of the East Asian civilization circle.
Key words: court music of the Ming Dynasty, power and civilization code, religious influence.

The cellulose and paper industry in the Sakhalin region in historical retrospective (1905 – early 2000s)
The author addresses a problem that has not yet been adequately covered in Russian historiography. It is noted that, in addition to historians, specialists in economics, architecture, and urban studies have also addressed the issues of the formation and development of the Russian pulp and paper industry in general and the Sakhalin Region in particular. The historical retrospective covers the period from 1905 to the early 2000s. The research focuses on the establishment of the Karafuto Governorate and the formation of the industry's foundation, as well as the post-war reconstruction and modernization of paper mills, the late Soviet development of the pulp and paper industry, and its eventual closure. It is noted that from 1960 to 1985, the Sakhalin industry underwent technical modernization, which contributed to increased production volumes, but the pace of modernization was insufficient. The article also explores the foreign trade aspect related to the export of products and raw materials to foreign countries. The consequences of the new thinking and privatization policies are outlined. In summary, the author concludes that in the recent period, the economic sector of the Sakhalin Region has lost its market for paper production and pulp boiling. Imperial and soviet modernization in the North Caucasus
The article examines the processes of modernization in the North Caucasus during the period of imperial and Soviet rule, analyzing their goals, methods, and consequences. The study focuses on three key aspects: the use of education and science as tools of state power, the development of infrastructure and communications, and the impact of modernization processes on traditional social structures. It emphasizes that both the Russian Empire and the Soviet state sought to integrate the region into a common political and economic space, but their approaches and outcomes differed significantly. During the imperial period, the focus was on adapting the local elite and spreading Russian culture, while the Soviet government sought to create a new identity based on communist ideology. The development of infrastructure and communications contributed to economic growth, but it often ignored the needs of the local population and led to environmental problems. Modernization had a mixed impact on traditional institutions and social relations, exacerbating interethnic conflicts and social tensions. Based on an analysis of historical sources and a comparative approach, the author concludes that the modernization processes in the North Caucasus were complex and contradictory, requiring consideration of historical experiences in the implementation of modern development projects in the region.
Key words: North Caucasus, modernization, Russian Empire, Soviet Union, education, science, infrastructure, communications, social structures, tradition.

Soviet life of the 1930s through the prism of periodicals and fiction
The article is a comprehensive study of Soviet life in the 1930s based on a comparative analysis of its representation in two types of sources: the official periodical press (Pravda, Izvestia, Ogonek, Rabochaya) and the fiction of that era (works by M. Bulgakov, M. Zoshchenko, A. Platonov, E. Schwartz, etc.)..The purpose of the study is to analyze the representation of soviet life in the 1930s in the official periodical press and fiction in order to identify the dialectic between the propaganda myth and the historical reality of everyday life. Research methods: study and analysis of literature, statistical processing of the data obtained. Results and conclusions of the study: The Soviet way of life in the 1930s existed in two parallel realities: constructed by official propaganda and real, reflected in literary texts. Fiction performed a compensatory function, acting as a form of preserving historical memory. The contradiction between the New Life project and its practical implementation became a systemic characteristic of the soviet modernization of the 1930s.

Ossetian cult of the thunder deity in the manuscripts of E.G. Pchelina
This article examines manuscripts by the eminent Caucasus scholar E.G. Pchelina (1895-1972) on the Ossetian cult of the thunder deity Uatsilla. The researcher identified structural connections between Uatsilla and other deities of the Ossetian pantheon and also provided information on many Uatsilla shrines unknown from other sources. Pchelina advanced the promising hypothesis that the cult of Uatsilla may have reflected ancient contacts between the ancestors of the Ossetians and the adherents of Judaism. E.G. Pchelina’s manuscripts significantly expand our knowledge of the cult of the thunder deity Uatsilla, facilitating the reconstruction of archaic layers of traditional Ossetian culture.

From newspaper ads to computers: the evolution of enrollment in a Soviet university using the example of the Kursk Polytechnic Institute
The study of the work of university admissions committees, which, on the one hand, promptly responded to changes in government requirements, and on the other, determined the quality of future specialists and, consequently, influenced the development of science and technology in general, deserves special attention.
An analysis of the documents and materials of the admission committee of the Kursk Polytechnic Institute for the period from 1964 to 1985 will allow us to study the development and changes in the mechanisms of the admission committee, methods and principles of organizing its work over the twenty years since the founding of the Kursk Polytechnic Institute, as well as to assess the impact of the institute's technical orientation in planning the admission campaign.
The relevance of the research is due to the need to study the experience of Soviet higher education institutions, since many of the approaches and methods used then remain relevant in modern conditions. Studying the practice of the admissions committees of the past years helps to identify effective models of educational process management that contribute to improving the quality of professional training for graduates of technical specialties.
The results of such a study contribute to a better understanding of the historical dynamics of social mobility and the distribution of professional resources.
The purpose of the study is to study in detail the historical changes in the mechanisms and processes of the Kursk Polytechnic Institute Admissions Committee in the period from 1964 to 1985.
