This essay attempts to hit two goals: fist, to determine bibliographical environment, in which some of the study of modern Russian Orthodoxy were generated; and second, to indicate some of the peculiarities of that environment, which in the past have misled researchers about the church. Nearing completion are the dissertations dealing with internal Church affairs, such as the education and Orthodoxy and Enlightenment (Kleymenov V.A., Isakov A.A., Lebedeva N. A.) Others go beyond the Russian frontier and are concerned with the Russian Rascol Society (Mayorov R.A., Pavlova O. A.) and Metropolitan Platon’s position with regard to the Church Architecture.(Robinov O.Y., Putyatin I.V.) The every-year conference “Platonovskiye chteniia” demonstrates the great need for ecclesiastical and cultural professional cooperation for the studying of Russian church history. We hope that this essay will contribute in some small way to encouraging young scholars to devote more attention to the study of Russian church history.
