«Soft power» in the foreign policy of the Republic of Korea and China

The primary objective of foreign policy of any country is national security and the tools of soft power are considered as an effective mechanism for its implementation. There are various «soft resources» such as national culture, education, democratic institutions and successful economic reforms that are applied by means of public diplomacy, communications, international economic programs, academic exchanges, cultural and sports activities with the aim of creating a positive international image of the state abroad. Political aspects of modern Islam in Turkey

The growth of extreme political violence in the Middle East, recent migration crisis and the threat posed by terrorist groups inevitably draw attention to the question of rising Islamic fundamentalism and quite often give rise to increased Islamophobia among non-Muslim nations. The portrayal of political Islam as an illegitimate political expression and claims that Islam and secular democracy cannot coexist are not uncommon. The article argues that Islam need not be incompatible with democracy; on the contrary, it can and should go hand in hand with democracy. Turkey’s experience may serve as an example of such coexistence, although the quality of democracy in Turkey is debatable The question is examined in a historical perspective: from the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey and implementation of secularist reforms to the present day, including more than 14 years of rule by the Islamic-inclined Justice and Development Party.

Keywords: Political Islam, democracy, secularism, Turkey.
